The Role Of The Philippines In Southeast Asia's War On Terror

During the recently concluded Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Regional Forum in Brunei, the nations of Southeast Asia signed an anti-terrorism pact with the United States. Will this agreement help win the war on terrorism or is it just another treaty not worth the paper it's written on? In the Philippines, meanwhile, the Balikatan (" shoulder-to-shoulder") exercises ended formally to mixed reviews. While the hostage crisis involving two American missionaries ended, one of them died in the rescue operation. And although the U.S.-Philippine joint exercises upgraded significantly the Philippine military's ability to deal with terrorism, communist insurgents in the north and communist insurgents in the south remain a threat to peace and order. Please come and join us as Philippine Secretary of Defense Angelo Reyes discusses these and other issues.
