The sale of facilities at six U.S. ports to Dubai World Ports, a state-owned company in the United Arab Emirates, has sparked a firestorm of criticism, with many arguing that the U.S. should block the sale entirely.
But the facts don't support such a drastic move, write James Carafano and Alane Kochems. The UAE is a close ally in the war on terrorism, and port security should be unaffected.
However, Congress hasn't taken a close look at the laws governing such sales since 1988. A brief delay may be in order so that Congress can review the rules and ensure that national security is being properly maintained.
