Extending NATO membership to Israel could convince Iran's Mullahs that developing a nuclear capability is not in their interest, propose John Hulsman and Nile Gardiner of Heritage's new Margaret Thatcher Center for Freedom.

The Thatcher Center was founded to promote American and British leadership in the war on terror. Iran presents a unique opportunity for joint diplomacy on the world stage.

"Israeli accession to NATO would explicitly extend the Western alliance’s nuclear deterrent to cover Tel Aviv and Jerusalem," write Hulsman and Gardiner. Such extended deterrence, with its proven record in the Cold War, is the "one ace left to play before a final showdown looms."
