South Dakota offers families very limited school choice options. The state does not support private school choice, but it does allow for some choice within the public education system.
Public School Choice:
South Dakota provides some choice within the public education system. It offers both inter-district and intra-district open enrollment.
Private School Choice:
South Dakota does not offer private school choice.
South Dakota is one of only 8 states that have not yet passed a charter school law.
According to the Keeping Pace with K-12 Online Learning report, South Dakota has a state-led online program, the South Dakota Virtual School (SDVS). In the 2010-2011 school year, SDVS had nearly 3,822 course enrollments. Nearly 200 school districts, tribal schools, and private schools had students enrolled in the state-led online program. The state has no charter school law and thus no full-time online learning options.
