High Corporate Taxes Undermine U.S. Global Competitiveness
By Ambassador Terry Miller and Anthony Kim
(WebMemo #2065)
High tax rates deprive companies of both the means and the incentive to take advantage of new market opportunities or technological changes that can improve productivity. Most advanced countries in the world have responded to new global economic realities by slashing corporate tax rates. The U.S. stands almost alone in having resisted such cuts, and its corporate tax rates are now among the highest in the world. Future U.S. prosperity depends on the willingness of our political leaders to resist populist anti-corporate dogma and make the necessary adjustments to keep the U.S. economy competitive.

How Do U.S. Foreign Aid Recipients Vote at the U.N.? Against the U.S.
By Brett D. Schaefer and Anthony B. Kim
(Backgrounder #2171)
Most major recipients of U.S. assistance vote against the U.S. more often than they vote with the U.S. Forging freedom coalitions in the U.N. is a practical strategy to promote mutual policy objectives. The U.S. should adopt a policy of letting aid recipients know that undermining U.S. priorities at the U.N. will affect future decisions on allocation of U.S. aid.

America must be a light to the world, not just a missile." Four years later, in a volatile presidential election year, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has deployed a legislative "missile" at the front line of U.S. foreign policy: free trade with an important ally, Colombia.

Although, given the challenges posed by several contentious trade issues, a U.S.–South Korea free trade agreement in the near future may be an overly ambitious goal, it is undoubtedly in the interests of both countries. If an agreement is to be reached, however, this positive assessment must be accompanied by concerted efforts in Washington and Seoul.

Protectionism, A Perilous Recipe for Sustainable Economic Recovery
By Anthony Kim
In light of market turmoil and slowing-down economic growth in many parts of the world, popular pressure for governments to intervene in order to fix the worsening economic situation has been on the rise. Moving forward with FTA
By Anthony B. Kim
The prospect of a free trade agreement between South Korea and the United States is ruffling some feathers. For example, the actors and actresses in the film industry aren`t pleased. "To the U.S. demand, the Roh government has kneeled down," they wrote in a joint statement earlier this year. With an appeal to nationalistic sentiment, a former agriculture minister went even further by saying that the agreement would turn South Korea into the "51st U.S. state." In addition, the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions has been organizing a general strike to coincide with the second round of negotiations this week.
