Commentary Editor, The Daily Signal

The commentary editor will primarily work on the commentaries and op-eds that are published by The Daily Signal, the multimedia news organization of The Heritage Foundation. The commentary editor will be responsible for commissioning and editing compelling content from Heritage researchers and others with the goal of persuading and activating audiences needed to achieve conservative policy victories.

Job Duties:

  • Works with managing editor to develop and execute strategy to position The Daily Signal as the leading source of conservative policy analysis and commentary.
  • Looks to the news cycle and ongoing policy debates for opportunities to add Heritage’s voice through op-eds, videos and infographics for The Daily Signal.
  • Acquires familiarity with Heritage’s policy research and positions and strategizes how to make them better known and understood.
  • Coordinates with colleagues in the Communications Group on messages to be promoted on The Daily Signal.
  • Works with graphic designers to develop charts and infographics that illustrate key policy findings and are accessible to a broad audience.
  • Works with news editor and managing editor to edit news stories as needed.
  • Helps with proofreading and fact checking both commentary and news articles as needed, and is well versed in Associated Press style.
  • Works with lawmakers, book authors and other D.C. influentials to contribute op-eds.
  • Coordinates with Heritage’s creative and digital teams to feature relevant tweets, graphics, photos and videos in commentary pieces.
  • Develops positive relationships with national bloggers and journalists and encourages them to read and share Daily Signal content.
  • Represents the organization at appropriate media conferences and functions.

    Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience:

    2-3 years of publishing, editing, and/or media experience; knowledge of the newsroom and the workings of the Hill and/or think tanks.

    • Microsoft Office and Outlook, WordPress
    • Understand and support the Heritage mission and vision for America, and the team’s goals and objectives.

    • Ability to handle multiple projects, prioritize them, and deliver first-rate work.

    • Excellent news judgment and quick reaction to news developments. Aptitude for thinking big, working wisely and quickly iterating.
    • Ability to provide and receive constructive criticism and feedback.
