Fewer Workers, More Retirees
Social Security is essentially a pay-as-you-go program. In other words, current worker's payroll taxes pay current retirees benefits. But what happens as society ages and the number of retirees, relative to workers, increases? Without reform, there are only two answers: either cut benefits or force workers to pay more and more. Social Security just wasn't made for these times.
