Federal DOMA in 1996: This senator voted for the federal DOMA in 1996 and for the Marriage Protection Amendment in 2004 and 2006.
Senator's Comments: As Senator, I will insist that the United States Senate be a place that reflects our common sense, conservative Tennessee values by supporting faith and family. It must be a place where we always remember that we are "one nation under God", where we support the sanctity of marriage , and we strive to bring out the best in each other. FMA Cloture in July 2004:
Senator's Name: Lamar Alexander, Republican
Website: http://alexander.senate.gov/index.html
Federal DOMA in 1996: This senator was elected in 2002, therefore not present for the federal DOMA In 1996. The senator voted for the Marriage Protection Amendment in 2004 and 2006.
Senator's Comments: "I believe marriage should be between a man and a woman. That is the law today in Tennessee. In addition, the federal Defense of Marriage Act, enacted in 1996, gives Tennessee the right to enforce our definition of marriage even if other states adopt a different view. Since same-sex marriages are already outlawed in Tennessee, I have not yet been persuaded that it is also necessary to amend the Constitution. The Constitution of the United States has served our country well for more than 200 years. I believe it should not be tampered with unless absolutely necessary. If a federal court somehow took away Tennessee?s right to enforce our law defining marriage as between a man and a woman, I would certainly then support a constitutional amendment restoring that right." -statement 6-15-04
?Republican Sen. Lamar Alexander told the Washington bureau of The Knoxville News Sentinel that current law giving states the authority to set marriage laws is enough. ? ?Federal law makes clear our state?s right? to enforce its law defining marriage as between a man and a woman, Alexander said. ?I am not persuaded that amending the Constitution is necessary.? Associated Press, Feb. 19, 2004

FMA Cloture in July 2004: This senator voted for the cloture concerning the FMA in July 2004.
