Co-Sponsor of Allard Amendment. INTERVIEW Q: Some other Senators are saying this is just a state issue. What would you say to that? Inhofe: Well, I don?t like constitutional amendments as a general rule. But I think if this [homosexual marriage] came up, I would be supportive of the amendment. ? | Senator's Comments: |
?I am opposed to government recognition of any union that is not a marriage between one man and one woman. Marriage between one man and one woman has been the foundation of the family and of human society since the beginning of civilization.
During my tenure in Congress, I was a co-sponsor for the Defense of Marriage Act passed by Congress and signed by President Clinton in 1996. This law defines marriage for federal purposes as a union between one man and one woman. It also protects states from being forced to recognize same-sex marriage performed in other states. I also voted against granting taxpayer funded "domestic partnership" benefits, in the District of Columbia.
Because liberal activist judges have chosen to redefine marriage, as a U.S. Senator I will support a Constitutional amendment to define marriage as a union between one man and one woman.? (coburnforsenate.com)
?Unfortunately, activist judges are working to undermine DOMA. In order to protect the traditional definition of marriage from being rewritten by judges I support a Constitutional amendment to define marriage as a union between one man and one woman.? (coburn.senate.gov)
