Statutory Provision

Illinois Compiled Statutes.  Chap. 750-5, Part II, § 212. Prohibited Marriages.

(a) The following marriages are prohibited:

(5) a marriage between 2 individuals of the same sex.

Current Legislative Activity

Protect Marriage Illinois is currently collecting signatures to place a marriage amendment on ballot in November 2008.  The text of the amendment would be:

"To secure and preserve the benefits of marriage for our society and for future generations, the union of one man and one woman in marriage shall be the only agreement recongized as marriage or similar union for any purpose."
