Percentage of Unemployed Mothers and Children in Poverty by Marital StatusThe Fragile Families Survey from Princeton and Columbia Universities has taught America a lot about out-of-wedlock births and about the parents of these newborns. This chart illustrates that, should these parents marry each other, when the conditions are correct (they are interested in marriage, the father has a steady--not necessarily even medium--income, and the father is not abusive or addicted to drugs or alcohol) poverty will drop dramatically. For mothers who are not working at all, 65 percent of mothers and children would come out of poverty should they marry the fathers of their children. Source: Robert E. Rector, Kirk A.
