Children's Time in Poverty by Family StructureWhen we look at a different measurement--total childhood time in poverty by family structure--we see a similar pattern. The child in the always-intact, married family spends the least amount of time in poverty, 7 percent. The child of the single-parent, divorced family, spends 22 percent of his childhood in poverty. Interestingly, the child born out of wedlock who later grows up in a married family spends almost the same amount of time in poverty (24 percent). Finally, the child who grows up in the always-single-parent family--where normally it is the father who has rejected marriage to the mother--spends the most time in poverty (51 percent).
