School Choice
in America
Summary:
Virginia offers families very few school choice options. The state does not support private school choice. It also has not enacted an open enrollment policy, according to the Education Commission of the States.
Public School Choice:
The Center for Education Reform reports that Virginia has a weak charter school law. The state had only 5 public charter schools which served approximately 275 students in 2007-08.
Online Learning:
According to the Keeping Pace with K-12 Online Learning report, Virginia has a state-led online program – Virtual Virginia – which offers Advanced Placement and language courses to students who do not have access to such classes in their traditional schools. During the 2007-2008 school year, 3,026 students enrolled in Virtual Virginia. The state also offers significant online district programs.
