WASHINGTON, AUG. 10, 2007—The White House today announced a series of new administrative reforms to continue to address border security and immigration policy based on existing law.

"These are excellent steps that should be widely supported and when implemented will be a material step forward in securing our borders and strengthening legal immigration," said Ed Meese, chairman of the Center for Legal and Judicial Studies at The Heritage Foundation. "This initiative puts the Bush administration back in the saddle of immigration law enforcement."

Of the array of impressive measures reforms announced, the vast majority are ideas that have been proposed and are supported by The Heritage Foundation’s analysts.

"This package is creative and smart," said Matthew Spalding, director of Heritage’s B. Kenneth Simon Center for American Studies. "The best way to move the ball forward is not comprehensive legislation but targeted and effective enforcement measures focused where there is extensive agreement and widespread popular support."
