The massive July 1 demonstration in Hong Kong marked a tough and eventful year. Half a million Hong Kong citizens demonstrated in protest of proposed national security legislation mandated by Article 23 of the Basic Law. This came in the wake of the SARS epidemic and serious economic problems that had already battered the administration of Hong Kong’s Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa. U.S. Consul General James Keith will address these developments and outline America’s hopes and expectations for Hong Kong and its people.
