Since its birth in the 1950s, the project of European integration has enjoyed the unquestioning support of successive U.S. administrations. The emerging European Union was seen as good for peace and convenient for international diplomacy. However, questions as to its present usefulness and future direction have been raised by recent events – the Iraq war, its wish to end the Chinese arms embargo and its ambitions in space. This conference aims to examine those questions in unprecedented depth, so that U.S. policy makers can travel the road ahead with their eyes open.
