Federal spending is at an all time high with annual expenditures now topping $20,000 per household. In an effort to stem this tide, some brave legislators have developed innovative proposals aimed at pulling out federal spending by its roots. One such proposal by Senator Sam Brownback (R-KS), the Commission on the Accountability and Review of Federal Agencies (CARFA) Act, would create a commission that would review these agencies to help ensure the elimination of programs that are considered duplicative, wasteful, inefficient, irrelevant or failed. A proposal with similar goals has also been championed in the House of Representatives by Rep. Kevin Brady (R-TX). Additionally, the Bush Administration has joined the chorus this year with its own proposal for commissions to ensure programs and agencies are working and that tax dollars aren't wasted.
