In November, the federal moratorium on state taxation of Internet access expired, allowing state and local governments – for the first time since 1998 – to tax Internet service. Supporters of such taxation argue that it is an important and legitimate means for states to balance their precarious budgets, and that the federal government should not interfere. Others say the moratorium should be re-imposed – arguing that the Internet is an inherent, and critical, part of Interstate economy, and its growth should not be impeded by state tax collectors.
