Conventional employment-based health plans offer limited choices and they may not fit your personal needs or those of your family. Worse, health plans may require members to pay premiums for procedures that may violate their deepest moral, ethical or religious convictions. What about personal freedom of conscience? While controversies today might center on abortion, tomorrow they could center on human cloning, genetic engineering or end of life issues. Should Americans be able to choose health plans that are compatible with their ethical, moral and religious convictions? Should fraternal faith-based organizations be able to sponsor health insurance like they sponsor life insurance? What changes in law or regulation are necessary to allow such options to flourish? What is the status of freedom of conscience and choice in health insurance today? With the rise of biomedical research, what new moral and ethical challenges face Americans tomorrow? What are churches, faith-based organizations and religious institutions doing today to meet these challenges? Our panelists will address these and many other questions.
