Cold War Moves into Space
Has the Cold War Moved into Space?
Space is the final frontier for effective missile defense systems not just for America but for other countries, mainly Russia and China at the moment, which leads all to believe that the Cold War may have moved into space and now involves more players. U.S. capability makes both Russia and China very nervous because they realize they do not have similar capabilities. In fact, they are trying to catch up. Russia's lack of similar systems is one reason why they are so opposed to U.S. missile defense installations in Poland and the Czech Republic. China has tested ASAT missiles to take down satellites. The presumption is that they may use this technology if necessary against the U.S. to eliminate communication satellites if a conflict ever arose.
The U.S. Space Policy Directive Fundamental Purpose to Protect America
The U.S. will continue to explore and use space for peaceful means. Space will continue to be used for defensive purposes by the U.S. Space security is a major part of the responsibility of the U.S. government to protect its citizens and provide for the country's defense. Russia and China have consistently opposed the use of space for any military means, yet space is already weaponized. Satellites can be used as weapons against other satellites in space. Intercontinental ballistic missiles use space to deliver their warheads. The Cold War moves to space with Russia and China striving to catch up with the U.S. Russia and China are in opposition to space based defense because they don't have an effective system in place. If they did, they would not be against the use of space for military purposes. The U.S. has to remain diligent to fund and continue development on space-based defenses to counter the actions in space that are hostile to the U.S.
